Andal Jayanthi (Aadi Pooram)

The birth of Andal, the only woman among the twelve Alvars, found as an infant under a tulsi plant by Periyalvar. She composed the Tiruppavai and refused any husband but Ranganatha, into whose image she is said to have merged at Srirangam. Girls are given garlands and the day marks their coming of age in some families.
