About

Celebrates the return of King Bali from Patala. Marathi families worship Bali Raja. Also observed as Diwali Padwa.

Falls on
Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the day after Diwali.
Also called
Annakut, Bali Pratipada, Padwa, Govardhan Annakut

The story

Krishna persuaded the cowherds to stop the annual sacrifice to Indra and honour the mountain that actually fed their cattle. Indra, enraged, sent seven days of rain; Krishna lifted Govardhan on his little finger and sheltered the village beneath it.

How it is observed

A mound of cow dung or food shaped as the hill, worshipped and circumambulated. Annakut, a mountain of food, sometimes a hundred and eight or more dishes, arranged before the deity and then distributed. Cattle are decorated and honoured.

Food

Annakut itself, the largest food offering of the Hindu year. Kadhi and rice are traditional in Braj.

Regional variation

Braj and the Vaishnava temples of Gujarat and Rajasthan do the largest Annakuts; Nathdwara's is famous. Maharashtra keeps the same day as Bali Pratipada, honouring King Bali's annual return, a completely different story on the same tithi.

Common questions

What is Annakut?
A mountain of food offered to Krishna on the day after Diwali, echoing the Govardhan hill he lifted to shelter the cowherds. Temples prepare dozens or even hundreds of dishes, arrange them in a mound before the deity, and distribute them afterwards. It's the largest single food offering in the Hindu calendar.
Are Bali Pratipada, Govardhan Puja and Bestu Varas the same day?
Same tithi, three different festivals. Maharashtra marks King Bali's annual return from the netherworld. North India marks Krishna lifting Govardhan, with the Annakut food offering. Gujarat marks its new year. All on Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the day after Diwali.
