Gujarati New Year, celebrated the day after Diwali. New account books (Chopda Puja) are opened with prayers for prosperity.
Gujarat begins its Vikram Samvat year here rather than at Chaitra, making it one of the few regions whose new year is offset from the rest of North India by roughly seven months. The same tithi is Bali Pratipada in Maharashtra and Govardhan Puja elsewhere.
Temples fill from before dawn. Nutan Varshabhinandan and Saal Mubarak exchanged. Homes visited, sweets given, and businesses perform chopda pujan, new account books opened and blessed.
The Diwali sweets continue; mohanthal, ghari in Surat, and a full Gujarati thali.
Specific to Gujarat and the Gujarati diaspora. Elsewhere the same day is Govardhan Puja or Bali Pratipada, three different festivals on one tithi.
