Vishnu wakes from his four-month sleep. Chaturmas ends and the auspicious calendar reopens.
Vishnu is ceremonially woken, in many households with singing, conch and a rangoli of footprints drawn to the doorway. Sugarcane, water chestnut and freshly harvested produce are offered. Tulsi Vivah is performed on this day or the next, and is traditionally the first wedding of the new season.

In Gujarat and Maharashtra strongly tied to Tulsi Vivah. In North India it's known as the day weddings resume, and the wedding-date rush begins immediately after.
