About

The grand immersion of Lord Ganesha idols on Anant Chaturdashi, the 10th and final day of Ganesh Chaturthi. Massive processions with music, dance, and chants of "Ganpati Bappa Morya".

Falls on
Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturdashi, ten days after Ganesh Chaturthi.
Also called
Ananta Chaturdashi, Anant Chaudas, Ganesh Visarjan, Ananta Vrat

The story

Two things share the day. Vishnu as Ananta, the infinite, is worshipped and a fourteen-knotted thread tied, from the Mahabharata, where Krishna advised Yudhishthira to keep this vrat during the exile to recover what was lost. Separately it's the last day of Ganesh Utsav.

How it is observed

The Ananta thread is tied on the arm, men on the right, women on the left. And the ten-day Ganesha idols are taken in procession for immersion, the largest single day of visarjan.

Food

Modak a final time; and for the Ananta vrat, wheat-flour preparations and puran poli.

Regional variation

The Ananta vrat is stronger in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Odisha. The Ganesh visarjan is the more visible half in Maharashtra. These are two observances on one day.

Common questions

Are Anant Chaturdashi and Ganesh Visarjan the same day?
Same day, two different things. Anant Chaturdashi is a Vishnu vrat where a fourteen-knot thread is tied, and it comes from the Mahabharata. Ganesh Visarjan is the last day of the ten-day Ganesh festival, when the idols are immersed. They coincide, which is why the day feels like it's about Ganesha in Maharashtra and about Vishnu elsewhere.
