About

Birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha in Magha month (Maghi Chaturthi). Celebrated with Modak offerings and Ganesha puja. Distinct from Ganesh Chaturthi in Bhadrapada.

Falls on
Magha Shukla Chaturthi, January or February. Not to be confused with Ganesh Chaturthi in Bhadrapada.
Also called
Magha Ganesh Jayanti, Tilkund Chaturthi, Varad Chaturthi, Maghi Ganpati

The story

In this tradition, Magha Shukla Chaturthi is Ganesha's birth day, while Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi marks his appearance or installation. Both are observed and the distinction is a real one in Maharashtra.

How it is observed

Fasting, worship with durva grass and red flowers, and a Ganesha idol installed for one and a half days in some households. Sesame is central, hence Tilkund Chaturthi.

Food

Til laddoo and tilkut, sesame-and-jaggery preparations suited to the cold.

Regional variation

Primarily Maharashtra and Goa. Barely observed in North India, where "Ganesh Chaturthi" always means the Bhadrapada one.

Common questions

Does Ganesh Chaturthi come twice a year?
There are two, and they're different festivals. Ganesh Chaturthi in Bhadrapada, around August-September, is the big ten-day one. Ganesha Jayanti in Magha, around January-February, is treated in Maharashtra as his actual birthday and is much quieter, sesame sweets, a day-and-a-half installation. Outside Maharashtra the second one is largely unknown.
