Bengali festival honouring sons-in-law (jamai); mothers-in-law pray for their well-being and long life.
Jagaddhatri, "upholder of the world", is a form of Durga, and her puja in Chandannagar is famous for its lighting, on a scale that rivals Durga Puja locally. Jamai Shashti is a domestic occasion rather than a temple one: a mother-in-law feeds and blesses her son-in-law, who is fanned, given gifts and fed an enormous meal.
Jamai Shashti demands an extravagant spread, multiple fish preparations, mutton, and sweets. It is a competitive meal.
