Full panchang for this day

About

The invocation (Avahana) of Jyeshtha Gauri, welcomed into homes during Ganeshotsav in Maharashtra.

Falls on
Bhadrapada, on Anuradha, Jyeshtha and Mula nakshatras respectively, three consecutive days during Ganeshotsav

What it is

One three-day observance, in three stages. Gauri, Parvati, and in household terms Ganesha's mother, arrives on Anuradha (avahana, invocation), is worshipped on Jyeshtha (puja), and departs on Mula (visarjan). Two masks or metal faces are installed, dressed in saris and ornaments as married women of the house, and treated as visiting guests. It's dated by nakshatra, not tithi, which is why it moves relative to Ganesh Chaturthi.

Food

A full festive meal on the puja day, sixteen vegetables, puran poli, and bhaji, served as to honoured guests.

Common questions

Why does Gauri arrive along with Ganpati?
Gauri is Ganesha's mother, and in Maharashtra she visits for three days during the Ganesh festival, arriving on Anuradha nakshatra, worshipped on Jyeshtha, and leaving on Mula. Two decorated faces are installed and dressed as married women of the household, and a full feast is cooked for them on the middle day. It's dated by nakshatra rather than tithi, so it shifts against Ganesh Chaturthi.
