Punjabi mid-winter harvest festival, celebrated the day before Makar Sankranti with a bonfire, folk songs and dance.
The end of the winter solstice period and the start of the harvest of rabi crops. A bonfire is lit at dusk; sesame, jaggery, popcorn, peanuts and rewri are thrown into it with the call "Aadar aye dilather jaye". Songs of Dulla Bhatti, a Punjabi folk figure who rescued girls from being sold and arranged their marriages, are sung. The first Lohri after a wedding or a birth is celebrated especially, with the family distributing sweets.
