About

Sisters tie a sacred thread (Rakhi) on brothers' wrists. Brothers pledge protection. Bond of sibling love.

Falls on
Shravana Purnima, August. Traditionally not tied during Bhadra, which often runs through the morning.
Also called
Rakhi, Rakhi Purnima, Nariyal Purnima, Kajari Purnima, Pavitropana, Avani Avittam (same day, different observance)

The story

Several. Indrani tied a thread on Indra's wrist before battle with the asuras. Draupadi tore her sari to bind Krishna's bleeding finger, and he pledged to protect her. Yama's sister Yamuna tied a thread and he granted her immortality.

How it is observed

A sister ties a rakhi on her brother's wrist, applies tilak, and he gives a gift and a promise of protection. Now widely extended beyond siblings, to cousins, friends, soldiers.

Food

Sweets, ghevar in Rajasthan, coconut sweets on the coast, kaju katli and barfi generally.

Regional variation

The same tithi carries entirely different observances elsewhere. In Maharashtra's coastal districts it is Narali Purnima, when coconuts are offered to the sea and the fishing season opens. In the south it is Avani Avittam / Upakarma, when the sacred thread is changed. In Odisha it's Gamha Purnima. So one full moon holds four unrelated festivals.

Common questions

Can rakhi be tied during Bhadra?
Traditionally no, Bhadra is avoided for tying rakhi, and it often runs through the morning of Shravana Purnima, which is why panchangs publish a specific window. Worth knowing that Bhadra only actually obstructs when it's earth-dwelling, which depends on the Moon's sign and is true about a third of the time. Check what your panchang says rather than assuming the whole morning is blocked.
