About

Gujarat tradition, women cook in advance on this day (6th Krishna) for the next day (Shitla Satam), when no cooking is done.

Falls on
Shravan Vad Chhath

What it is

Randhan means cooking. The entire next day's food is cooked today, because tomorrow, Shitla Satam, no fire may be lit. At the end of the evening the stove is cleaned, worshipped, and left cold. It's a practical festival: an entire state cooks a day ahead in unison.

Food

Everything that will be eaten cold tomorrow, thepla, puri, bhakhri, sukhi bhaji, kadhi, and mithai. Deliberately dishes that keep.

Common questions

What is cooked on Randhan Chhath?
Everything for the next day, because on Shitla Satam the stove stays cold and no cooking is done. So you make things that keep and taste fine cold, thepla, puri, dry sabzi, bhakhri, kadhi and sweets. At the end of the night the stove is cleaned and worshipped, then not lit again until the day after.
