About

Grand chariot procession of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra. Puri Rath Yatra and Dakor Rathyatra in Gujarat.

Falls on
Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya, June or July.
Also called
Jagannath Rath Yatra, Ratha Jatra, Chariot Festival, Gundicha Yatra

The story

Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra travel from the Puri temple to the Gundicha temple, their aunt's house, and return nine days later. It is the one time of year the deities leave the sanctum, and famously the one occasion when anyone, of any caste or faith, may see them, since they come out into the street.

How it is observed

Three enormous chariots are newly built each year from specified timber and never reused. The Puri king sweeps the chariot platform with a golden broom, chhera pahara, an act of ritual humility by the highest-ranked man present. Then the chariots are pulled by hand by the crowd.

Food

Mahaprasad from the Puri kitchen, one of the largest temple kitchens in the world, and poda pitha, a baked rice-and-jaggery cake said to be Jagannath's favourite.

Regional variation

Puri is the origin and the largest. Ahmedabad's Rath Yatra is the second biggest and a major Gujarati event. ISKCON has taken the form worldwide, London, New York, Melbourne all hold one.

Common questions

What happens during Rath Yatra?
The three deities of the Puri temple, Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, leave the temple for nine days and travel to another temple on three huge chariots pulled by the public. New chariots are built every year and never reused. It's also the one time the deities can be seen by anyone at all, since they're out in the open street rather than in the sanctum.
