Marks Parvati giving Murugan the vel, the divine spear, to destroy Soorapadman. Devotees carry kavadi, decorated arched burdens, and many undertake body piercing with skewers and hooks as a vow, walking in procession while in a trance-like state.
Preceded by a fast, often 48 days of sattvik food and celibacy. Milk carried in pots as an offering.
