About

Sacred marriage of Tulsi (Holy Basil) with Lord Shaligram (Vishnu). Marks the end of Chaturmas and the start of marriage season.

Falls on
Kartik Shukla Ekadashi or Dwadashi, right after Devuthani Ekadashi.
Also called
Tulasi Kalyanam, Tulsi Shaligram Vivah, Tulsi Lagna

The story

Vrinda, devoted wife of the asura Jalandhar, was so faithful that her husband could not be killed. Vishnu took Jalandhar's form and broke her devotion, allowing his death. Cursed by her, Vishnu became the shaligram stone; she became the tulsi plant, and their marriage is performed each year in reparation.

How it is observed

A tulsi plant is dressed as a bride, sari, bangles, a small mandap of sugarcane, and married to a shaligram or a Krishna idol, with a full wedding ceremony including mangalashtaka verses. Traditionally the season's first wedding, and in many families no household wedding is held before it.

Food

Wedding fare, puran poli, sweets, sugarcane, amla, and the season's new produce.

Regional variation

Maharashtra and Gujarat observe it most elaborately, often over five days. In the south the equivalent is Tulasi Kalyanam. The tulsi vrindavan in a Maharashtrian courtyard is decorated for it specifically.

Common questions

Why is Tulsi Vivah performed?
It marks the end of Chaturmas and reopens the wedding season. The tulsi plant is married to Vishnu in the form of a shaligram stone, and that's traditionally the first wedding of the year. Many families won't hold a household wedding before it. The story behind it is Vrinda's, and the marriage is performed as reparation to her.
