About

The most sacred Ekadashi for Tamil Vaishnavas. "Gate of Vaikuntha" opens on this day. Grand celebrations at Srirangam temple.

Falls on
Margazhi Shukla Ekadashi, December or January.
Also called
Mukkoti Ekadashi (Telugu), Swarga Vathil Ekadashi, Putrada Ekadashi (north, same tithi)

The story

Vishnu is held to open the gates of Vaikuntha on this day, and those who pass through the Sorgavasal, the "gate of heaven", attain liberation. The Ekadashi is personified as a goddess born of Vishnu to defeat the demon Muran.

How it is observed

A full fast and a night vigil. At Srirangam, the Sorgavasal, a doorway opened only on this day, is thrown open before dawn and hundreds of thousands pass through it. Tirupati and Tirumala likewise.

Food

A strict fast; broken at the Dwadashi parana. Sakkarai pongal after.

Regional variation

Tamil Nadu, Andhra and Telangana keep it as the most important Ekadashi of the year. In Andhra it is Mukkoti Ekadashi. In the north the same tithi is Putrada Ekadashi and carries nothing like the same weight. The Vaikuntha framing is southern.

Common questions

Why isn't Vaikuntha Ekadashi observed in North India?
It's the same tithi, Margazhi or Pausha Shukla Ekadashi, but the Vaikuntha framing is a southern tradition, particularly Tamil and Telugu. In the north the day is Putrada Ekadashi and is much lower-key. The Srirangam gate that's opened only on this day is what makes it a very large event in the south.
