What it is

Married women worship Lakshmi in a decorated kalasha with a Lakshmi face fixed to it, dressed in a sari and jewellery. A nine- or twelve-knot thread is tied. Kept for the family's prosperity and the husband's wellbeing, and it is one of the most widely observed women's vrats in the south.

Food

Payasam, sundal, kosambari, and pulihora.

Common questions

Which day is Varalakshmi Vratam observed on?
The Friday before Shravana Purnima, so it's fixed to a weekday rather than a tithi, which is unusual. Married women set up a decorated pot with a Lakshmi face on it, dressed as the goddess, and tie a knotted thread. It's one of the biggest women's observances in Karnataka, Andhra and Tamil Nadu.
