Maharashtra version of Vat Savitri observed on Jyeshtha Amavasya. Women fast for the long life of their husbands.
Savitri followed Yama when he took her husband Satyavan's soul, and argued with him so persistently and so well that he returned it. Married women tie a thread around a banyan (vat) tree, long-lived, and so a symbol of endurance, circling it seven times, and fast for their husbands' long life.
A fast, often nirjala; broken after the tree worship.
