Pausha Putrada Ekadashi

Also called: Putrada Ekadashi, Vaikuntha Ekadashi (in some regional traditions)

Putrada means 'giver of a son' or, more broadly in modern explanation, an observance associated with the wish for children. The Pausha Shukla Ekadashi is one of two annual Ekadashis commonly called Putrada; the other falls in Shravana.

The story

In the commonly told vrata-katha, King Suketuman and Queen Shaibya grieve because they have no child. After meeting sages in the forest, the king is advised to observe the Ekadashi vrata. The narrative says that the observance is followed by the birth of a son. This is a traditional religious story, not a promise of a medical outcome.

Practices

  • Devotees may pray for family well-being, worship Vishnu and follow their customary fast.
